The Flash is a model I built for my nephew, Alec, as a
Christmas present. (Merry Christmas, Alec!) It's a resin recast of the rare
vinyl Horizon Flash kit, originally
released in 1995 but long since unavailable. Like most recasts, it needed a lot of work;
lots of holes and ill-fitting parts to deal with.
My biggest change to the kit was painting the yellow parts of
his costume gold. (Which is the way the Wally West Flash is kind of sort of
colored in the comics -- or as well as yellow with highlights can imitate real
gold.) I painted the body using flat colors (except for the gold, of course),
and the base with glossy white and yellow. This was the first kit where I used
Tamiya-brand acrylic
paints; I used to use Ral Partha, but my local hobby shop stopped carrying their
paints a while back, and now the company has gone out of business. Fortunately,
the Tamiya paints worked just fine.
The big challenge on this kit was keeping the Flash upright --
the only connection to the base is with the toes of his right boot. I ended up
using three pins and lots of Zap-a-Gap superglue, as I did with the Neal Adams Batman
model elsewhere on this site.
In any case, I like the way it turned out. The Flash is a big
model (over 12" tall), with a terrific, very dynamic pose. I hope my nephew
takes good care of it. (I'm sure he will -- right Alec?)
UPDATE: Twelve
months later (December 2002) The Flash finally fell down. (All that Zap-a-Gap
broke apart.) I was able to fix it by (surprise!) applying more Zap-a-Gap, since
the original pins still worked. So Wally is up and running again, much to my
nephew's delight.
