JL Green Lantern

This is the John Stewart Green Lantern from the Cartoon Network's Justice League animated series. The thing is, there is no Green Lantern model -- so I had to build this one from scratch!

This was my first scratch-built kit, and I wasn't totally sure what I was getting myself into. As it turned out, it was challenging but not too difficult, partly because I picked a rather easy Green Lantern to build. (There are hundreds of GLs in the Green Lantern Corps, and the animated John Stewart GL has about the simplest costume -- and no hair or cape to bother with!)

I started with a Blank #5 generic superhero male kit from Night Life Productions. I used Milliput to sculpt GL's armbands and ring, then followed up with a totally custom paint job. Note the glowing green eyes, as well as the lighter green glow on his ring. Everything was painted freehand (using Tamiya acrylic paints -- except for the green, which is from the old Ral Partha line), including GL's rather short haircut and chest symbol. The base is an oval wood plaque, spray-painted silver metallic.

This Green Lantern model was built as a Christmas gift for my nephew Ben. Ben is a budding model builder himself; his first kit was the Toy Biz Thing, which he did a really good job on. (He even learned to drybrush!) Ben's a big GL fan (although the Kyle Rayner GL is his favorite), so I hope he likes this one -- and takes good care of it!
