This was a bit of a change of pace -- a
very small kit. Easy enough to build (a half-dozen parts), but difficult to
paint, because of the extremely small details. (This one was a Christmas gift
from my parents -- thanks, Mom and Dad!)
The Scarlet Speedster is a 120mm scale kit,
sculpted by the talented Christopher
Elizardo and distributed by MojoResin.
The sculpt is terrific, somewhat surprisingly so given the size. The cast was
less terrific, with a bit of softness in some of the key details. (I've noticed
this in several of the MojoResin kits, whatever that means.) Still, it all came
together well, and looks great.
The main Flash outfit is all red, of
course. I went with a gold metallic on the boots and belt, instead of the Silver
Age yellow, because it looks cooler. I also chose to paint the eyes with white
lenses, even though the sculpt had some detail for normal see-through eyes.
Frankly, the cast was so soft the eye details all but disappeared, and with my
fading eyesight and poor painting skills, I would have had trouble with that
very small detail, anyway. The result is fine, and matches the
120mm Green Lantern, anyway.
For the base, I went with gloss paints to
contrast the flat paints of the figure. I originally used a gloss white inside
the gloss red to duplicate the Flash insignia, but didn't like the way it
looked. I opted for a gloss black, instead, and it looks a little better. In
retrospect, I probably should have spray-painted the base a single-color
metallic, as I did with the companion GL model.
All in all, a fun little project and a nice
change of pace from the big 1/6 and 1/8 models I generally do. (Note the photo
below that shows this kit next to the 1/8-scale Silver Age Flash -- that's 3.5"
vs. the normal 10" model!) And it's always good having another Flash on the
shelf -- this one in a very dynamic running pose.
